Abbey Holden
-
Abbey is a multidisciplinary artist in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founding her studio in 2016 as the culmination of her passions for painting, patterns and interior design - Abbey’s work spans different mediums and methods.
Abbey believes her responsibility as a creator is to share her reflections on beauty and the surrounding landscape with the world through art. To her, the act of creating itself is equally as significant as the final artwork. She views creating as a healing, reflective and uniquely human way to express gratitude. Abbey finds painting and making as tools to express her love for whatever it may be, her sorrows and her joys. To her, creating has become an essential way she moves through the world. It has carried her through loss and provided a way to meditate on beauty. Her hope is for her work to resonate with the viewers in ways unique to them and their own story.

Why do you create?
I create as my way of self expression in this life. I process the world through making art. I witness the world around me…I have lived experiences…I filter it in my own unique way and process it through creation. To me, creating is a necessity.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration through a practice of paying attention…my goal isn’t actually to make the art itself…my goal is to live in a state where making art is inevitable. I’m incredibly inspired by the natural world, it’s colors, patterns and textures. Beautiful spaces and conversations with people also inspire me. Ultimately, my inspiration is a constant state of receiving the world and filtering it through the process of making. The practice of living in a state of wonder is my key to remain inspired.
What is your process, has it changed over time?
The process of creating is my favorite part. It has always felt very sacred to me. I am someone who needs and values time alone. Going to my studio feels like I’m leaving a party early to go home to my comfortable space. Once in my studio, listening to music that moves me and having my dog sleep at my feet helps me get into the right headspace. I don’t over plan what I paint and and rely on intuition and practice to guide me.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I am happiest when I feel inspired. I hope to always return to that feeling. It feels hopeful and full of gratitude.
What is your most treasured possession?
I have my grandmother’s paintbrushes in my studio which I’ve always cherished. She was a great artist and the person who taught me how to paint. I feel they hold an energy that is really important to me. I’m also almost always wearing a necklace that was my mom’s. Both things make me feel connected and upheld.
Where would you most like to live in the Twin Cities?
I love where I live currently. I’m able to enjoy being close to the city while also in the middle of lakes and green spaces. I know how rare it is to have those two in tandem so I feel very lucky to live in a city with both.
What is your perfect day in the Twin Cities?
A perfect day in the twin cities would involve a walk with my dog around a lake or near the water, grabbing coffee with a friend, painting in my studio in Northeast Minneapolis and dinner downtown.
